BlackHairMedia recently had the opportunity to catch up with Supermodel Beverly Johnson. She was able to share with us some details about her new hair line.
BHM: It is a pleasure to be able to interview a fashion and beauty icon such as yourself. Thank you for giving BlackHairMedia the opportunity to be able to speak with you. We want to talk to you about some of the things you have going on right now such as your hair line, but we have to start at the beginning and ask about your history making modeling career. What was it like being the first black model on the cover of American Vogue?
Beverly Johnson: It was very exciting and it was an honor. It’s every girl’s dream to be on the cover of Vogue and that was a personal goal of mine. It was the single most incredible thing to ever happen to me (aside from the birth of my daughter.) I was very happy to have achieved that goal, but also soon realized that with this great honor, came responsibility, as it had an impact on the acceptance of Black beauty. I realized it meant a lot not only to mean but to people around the world.
BHM: Being in the modeling and acting industry you have met and worked with a lot of other women. Please share with us and give us the names of some women you thought had great hair and why.
Beverly Johnson: During my modeling career, I worked with Wanakee. She is a beautiful person and had beautiful hair. Often times, in modeling, you are asked to cut your hair, but Wanakee chose not to cut her hair. She had long beautiful hair. Peggy Dillard was a model with natural hair and chose not to straighten it, and I liked her hair. I also think NeNe Leakes, Eva Marcille, Zoe Saldana, Gabrielle Union, and Ciara have great hair.
BHM: In addition to the title of Supermodel, Actress, and Business Woman, you also have another title, Hair Guru. Tell us how you came to be known as the Hair Guru.
Beverly Johnson: I’ve always loved hair. In the early 90’s, there really wasn’t a lot of branding as it related to hair. During that time, I had a line of wigs and hair extensions with another company and it was very popular. I became synonymous with black hair. The line did very well (became the 4th largest brand in the nation) and was very successful. As a result of that success, I became known as the Hair Guru.
BHM: You are an inspiration, because not only have you made history during your career as a model, but you are an actress and a business woman. And speaking of business, you have a hair line. Can you tell us about your hair line and where it can be purchased? (The Beverly Johnson Luxurious Hair Collection)
Beverly Johnson: Yes, I decided to go into business for myself and I am now partnering with a new company. With the quality of the hair on the market, you wouldn’t always know what you were going to get. This is why I started my own hair line. The name of my hair line is The Beverly Johnson Luxurious Hair Collection. We have different textures of hair, from curly, to wavy, to straight. BHM: What makes the Beverly Johnson Luxurious Hair Collection unique and stand out from other hair brands?
Beverly Johnson: The most important thing that makes the Beverly Johnson Luxurious Hair Collection stand out from other brands is that I can wholeheartedly stand by this collection. My branding allows it to stand out from others and the fact that I am involved in every aspect of my hair line. I am very hands-on with this collection so when customers are buying from my line, they know they will be getting high quality hair.
BHM: You are amazingly beautiful, so we have to ask this because everyone wants to know. Do you have any beauty tips or advice that you could give us?
Beverly Johnson: The single most important piece of advice that I can give regarding beauty, is to take time for yourself. Take time out to take care of your health, your skin, and your hair. Everyone has jobs, children, and other responsibilities they have to juggle, but you have to take the time to take care of you.
